One gambler could turn $700 into $175,000 if one of the more successful NFL franchises from last season has a complete turnaround this year.
According to a report from CBS Sports, a customer at Fan Duel placed a bet on the Cleveland Browns to finish the 2021 season with the worst record in the league. During the 2020 season, the Browns snapped a string of terrible seasons to finish the season third in their division with an 11-5 record.
Cleveland defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round.
The gambler placed the $700 bet at a price of 250-to-1, meaning he could turn his wager into a six-figure score if the Browns revert to their old ways and finish last in the NFL. Last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars held the league’s worst record at 1-15. The team from Northern Florida won its first game of the year before dropping 15 in a row.
It’s an unlikely feat, but since the league expanded the playoff schedule in 1990, there have been five teams that made the playoffs and then finished at the bottom of the league the following year. Most recently, the 2013 Houston Texans hold the dubious honor, finishing 2-14 after a 2012 season where they went 12-4.
