A woman has revealed that her neighbor has a security camera pointed straight into her home, prompting a debate about whether or not it is illegal.

TikTok user @bbzeb, who is believed to live in the U.S., shared a video last week of herself reacting to the camera that was mounted on the side of the building next door.

‘When your neighbor installs a camera directly towards your window,’ she captioned the clip, which shows how the camera is facing her balcony’s sliding glass door.

The video has been viewed more than 360,000 times, and many were outraged by the camera pointed at her home.

‘I mean… What excuse could even be given for this?’ one person asked. ‘So intentional.’

‘That’s so illegal,’ another wrote, assuming the neighbor was a man. ‘By law he has to point it away from your window.’

‘Pretty sure that’s illegal,’ another agreed.

However, others argued that the neighbor might not be breaking any laws with the camera depending on the state and what type of lens it has.

‘If it’s a wide angle lens it may be “pointed” at you but it could be taking in a huge range — making your window very tiny,’ one TikToker explained.

‘My neighbor put up CCTV filming me in the garden and windows. Police said they can’t do anything as everyone has the right to protect their property,’ someone else shared.

As the Daily Dot reported, security camera laws vary from state to state. However, it’s legal in most states to have a security camera pointed at another home if it covers a ‘broad area’ or is in ‘lawful use,’ according to Reolink.

‘As long as the recorded videos don’t infringe on your privacy and are for lawful [purposes] only (like monitoring suspects or [preventing] package thefts at the front door), it is legal for your neighbor to point a security camera at your property in plain view,’ the site explains.

Other TikTokers offered the woman options on how to ensure the camera doesn’t film her daily, though some weren’t exactly legal.

‘Lol get the reflective tint for your windows,’ one person advised. ‘He won’t be able to view the camera.’

Someone else claimed a green ‘laser pointer will fry it,’ while another joked that it’s ‘time to buy a paint gun.’
