Two empty cop cars are set ablaze in NYC’s Flatiron District as officers launch hunt for arsonist

The NYPD are on the hunt for an arsonist who set two patrol cars on fire in city’s Flatiron District on Monday night.
Photos show the burned out shell of the cars with several of the windows smashed.
The targeted attack took place just around the corner from several touristy hotels including the recently opened Ritz Carlton Nomad.
A man, whose identity has not yet been determined, approached the two parked vehicles in Manhattan.
Both cars were set on fire close to the intersection of 29th Street and Sixth Avenue, at around 8:40pm.
One of the torched cars was visibly marked as a police vehicle, while the other was an unmarked unit.

Piles of trash was also set on fire just around the corner from where the patrol cars were lit
This was the scene at West 28th street in the Flatiron district were police investigated various trash fires deliberately set in the area
One of the cars was clearly marked as a police vehicle, while the other was not
Emergency responders, including firefighters, were promptly on the scene, whereupon they managed to extinguish the flames.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.
The unsettling events came as the city as braces for potential demonstrations and civil unrest related to the possible criminal charges being levied against former President Donald Trump by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The legal proceedings have garnered significant attention and prompted the former president to encourage his supporters to take to the streets and protest against his potential arrest.
The arsonist after setting the cars ablaze is believed to have also set a number trash fires
Firefighters were quickly on scene to put out both the car and trash fires
Police at 45 West 29th street in the Flatiron district are also seen investigating various trash fires deliberately set in the area
Both cars were set on fire close to the intersection of 29th Street and Sixth Avenue, at 8:40pm
The unsettling events came as the city as braces for potential demonstrations and civil unrest related to the possible criminal charges being levied against former President Donald Trump
The area where the cars were set ablaze was roped off by the emergency services
At present, there is no evidence to suggest that Monday night’s police car fires are connected to any protest, but law enforcement officials are remaining vigilant and are looking at a number of leads.
In a separate, but possibly related case, some trash was also set alight, just around the corner on Sixth Avenue, also on Monday evening.
Police believe the same person may well be responsible for both the police car fires and the trash fire.
So far no arrests have been made in connection with the incidents.
