Timothee Chalamet to play young Willy Wonka in new original story musical helmed by Paddington director

Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet will sing and dance as a young Willy Wonka in Warner Bros. musical Wonka helmed by Paddington director Paul King.

The 25-year-old native New Yorker beat out Tom Holland, Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover, and Ezra Miller for the part of the future chocolate factory owner.

King and co-screenwriter Simon Farnaby’s origin tale about how Wonka met the Oompa-Loompas is inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel – according to Deadline.

Wonka was most memorably played by the late great Gene Wilder in Mel Stuart’s beloved 1971 musical Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which only earned $4.5M at the box office.

Tim Burton released his non-musical remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005 starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, which amassed $475M at the box office.

In it, Blair Dunlop portrayed the younger troubled Willy, who ran away from home and became estranged from his candy-hating dentist father Wilbur.
