The Plaza Hotel’s Astor Suite is back on the market for $20 million


One of the most famous pieces of real estate in the world- which has housed prominent figures such as former president John F. Kennedy and real estate mogul John Jacob Astor – is back on the market for a cool $20 million. 

The historic ‘Astor Suite’, located in New York City‘s famous Plaza Hotel, has been dubbed ‘one of the most well-known homes in America’

The luxury hotel and condominium apartment building in Midtown Manhattan has hosted famous residents including Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, after the would-be King of England abdicated the throne in 1936 for his American wife. America’s own royalty JFK was also a guest, as business magnate and real estate mogul Astor shortly after the hotel opened in 1907. 

Featuring a unique L-shaped layout, the 4,299 square-foot, four-bedroom, four and a half bath residence was purchased by fashion brand Esprit founder Jürgen Friedrich, who bought the property in 2007 for $25.5 million.

In 2011 the Astor Suite, designed by interior architect Steven Gambrel – who made over the Royal Family’s Windsor Castle in England – had the distinct honor of being the most expensive rental in New York City, going for $165,000 a month. 

The suite was named after one of its famous guests, John Jacob Astor, in 1988 after former president and real estate mogul Donald Trump purchased the Plaza Hotel in 1988. According to the New York Post, his then-wife Ivana Trump, supervised a renovation of the suite a year later.

The revamp resulted in ‘a complete transformation that is unparalleled in every last detail’ that includes custom millwork, soaring 12-foot ceilings, old-world hand-drawn plaster, built-ins and fireplaces.

It also features rich English oak paneling, striking hand-hammered leather walls from France, and brand new furnishings from all around the world to ‘create the ultimate air of sophistication’ 

The 800-room French Renaissance château-style Plaza Hotel was designed by American architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh. After twenty-seven months of construction, the Plaza Hotel first opened its doors on October 1, 1907.

In 2005 the Plaza underwent a $450 million renovation and partial residential conversion, reopening in 2008.
