Sofia Vergara opens up about thyroid cancer at Stand Up To Cancer telethon


Sofia Vergara opened up about being diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 28 during a charity telethon.

The hour-long event was held this Saturday by Stand Up To Cancer whose co-founder Katie Couric was among the star-studded cast.

‘At 28 years old during a routine doctor’s visit, my doctor felt a lump in my neck,’ said Sofia, who was one of the hostesses of the event.

‘They did a lot of tests and told finally me I had thyroid cancer. When you’re young and you hear that word “Cancer,” your mind goes to so many places but I tried not to panic and I decided to get educated.’

The Modern Family superstar added: ‘I read every book and found out everything I could about it. I was fortunate to have caught it early and to have the support of my doctors and most importantly, my family.’

Sofia remembered: ‘I learned a lot during that time, not just about thyroid cancer but I also learned that in times of crisis, we’re better together.’

One of the top-flight cast members was Jennifer Garner who said in a speech: ‘We’re all here tonight for a reason – to stand up to cancer.’

The Yes Day actress shared: ‘Some of us are here because we’re missing a loved one dearly. Some of us are hoping for new advances and treatment and research. Some of us are standing up for science. I am here to remind you to get screened.’

On her end she revealed: ‘Every year I get my pap smear, my moles checked, my mammogram, I even from time to time get a colonoscopy.’

Reese Witherspoon, one of the executive producers on the special, opened the proceedings and made scattered appearances throughout.

‘Unfortunately cancer touches all of us. We’ve all got a story to share. Every day from every corner of this country, we lose 1,670 people to cancer,’ she stated.

‘But we can end this heartache by supporting Stand Up To Cancer, and when you give, 100% of your donations received tonight go directly to fund groundbreaking cancer research,’ said the Legally Blonde icon.

‘We are so grateful that more than 60 media platforms have donated their time tonight to help advance this research so just stand up with us and I do mean us.’

She went on: ‘We are connected and scattered all over the world but together in spirit and committed to turn every cancer patient into a long-term survivor.’

Katie Couric shared the heartaches she has suffered in her own life as cancer deprived her of two of the people who had been closest to her.

‘As you all know, cancer has affected so many people and like countless others, cancer has affected me in a deeply personal way,’ she said early in her speech.

‘I lost my husband, Jay, in 1998 to colorectal cancer when he was just 42 and a few years later, my older sister, Emily, died of pancreatic cancer. She was 54.’

The newswoman declared: ‘I realized I had to do something so I joined forces with eight remarkable women and we launched Stand Up To Cancer with a mission to make every cancer patient a long-term survivor through the power of collaboration, both inside and outside the lab.’

She gave a stirring rendition of the old 1930s standard I’ll Be Seeing You which has been sung by names ranging from Billie Holiday to Frank Sinatra to Francoise Hardy.

During her elegant performance she was accompanied by the simple traditional jazz trio of a piano, bass and drums.

Simone was given a warm introduction by Black-ish star Anthony Anderson who was one of the hosts of the evening’s telethon.

‘The world lost an incredible artist and a true hero. But before he was a public figure, he was a person like you or me – a son, a brother, uncle, cousin, friend, colleague, husband. Many of us are all too familiar with the fracture a dearly loved one’s passing leaves in the lives of those who love them.’

Anthony brought his widow onto the stage by saying: ‘Here to perform a song about living with the reality of loss and finding a way forward is Chadwick’s wife, Simone.’

She delivered her rendition of the number in memory of her sister Jamie who was just a teenager when she died of an eye cancer called retinal blastoma. 

Ken Jeong also delivered a speech with his wife Tran where they shared that she discovered she had breast cancer while nursing their twins.

Tran was blindsided as she had ‘no family history of breast cancer,’ but once she learned of her illness it was stage three triple negative.

The oncologist was unable to respond when Tran asked about her prospects and at that point ‘I knew I might not survive this.’

However she soldiered ahead and passed an eight-hour medical board recertification test ‘with flying colors,’ her proud husband gushed.

The exam ‘was my way of saying: “I’m going to beat this,”‘ said Tran, and she has been in remission for 13 years now.

‘The stories we heard tonight from doctors, patients, scientists and loved ones, are just a few examples of the true power of the unstoppable human spirit,’ said Common in a speech near the close of the telethon.

‘On behalf of all of us here, I’d like to thank all of you out there for donating to support life-changing and life-saving research. I want to send a special thanks to all of tonight’s storytellers and I dedicate this performance to them and to all of the cancer patients and survivors whose courage is an inspiration and a light to us all.’
