Robert De Niro’s former New York City townhouse of nearly 37 years sells for $11.98 million

Robert De Niro’s former West Village townhouse, where the legendary actor lived for nearly 37 years, has been sold for $11.98 million, almost $10 million less than it’s initial 2019 listing.

De Niro owned the property – a four-bedroom, four-bathroom Italianate-style home – from 1975 to 2012, when he unloaded it for $9.5 million, real estate records show.

That buyer lived in the townhouse until last month after listing for sale in 2019 at $22.75 million, according to the New York Post.

The price of the tony West Village home, which was built back in 1852 and boasts views of James J. Walker Park, was lowered dramatically before finding a new owner in September of this year.

The 78-year-old actor’s former townhouse had also been rented for a short period of time in 2018 for a whopping $45,000 a month.

According to the property’s listing, the four-story home, complete with a cellar, was renovated over the last three years.

The inside of the home includes a chef’s eat-in kitchen along with a marble covered island and a huge six-burner stove.

Meanwhile, the 12-foot-high ceilings create a sense of openness and space in the townhouse, with a lounge area on the top floor, complete with a dry bar, overlooking a garden in the property’s backyard.

There is also a formal dining room with a fireplace for entertaining visitors and guests.

The townhouse’s master suite includes an outdoor terrace which overlooks portions of Lower Manhattan. Another rooftop terrace sits atop the West Village property.

Townhouses in the Big Apple have become notoriously difficult to sell on the marketplace, which explains the property’s massive price slashing, while ‘The Real Housewives of New York’ star Sonja Morgan has had her Upper East Side home on the market since 2013.

The 78-year-old actor, who is currently living in a 98 acre property in Gardiner, New York, which he bought back in 1998 for just $1.5 million, also owns a home in Montauk on Long Island.

‘The Irishman’ star has been staying at the upstate New York home in the midst of a difficult divorce with his wife, Grace Hightower, who he married back in 1997.

Just last week, a judge denied his estranged wife’s request for half of De Niro’s earnings.

Hightower had claimed that a prenuptial agreement signed in 2004 granted her half of all his earnings for the years they were together.

However, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected Hightower’s arguments and requests, instead choosing to uphold a lower court’s ruling from earlier this year.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last summer, the actor’s attorney, Caroline Krauss, told the court via a Skype hearing that he would be staying in the Gardiner home ‘for the foreseeable future.’

‘He intends to reside in Gardiner for the foreseeable future,’ Krauss said of De Niro, who was born and raised in Manhattan.

‘He is after all 76 and in the category of people for which COVID-19 is dangerous.’

While De Niro has since rented out several other Manhattan properties over the years, in 2012, the same year he listed the West Village townhouse, he bought his first flat in London, which he eventually put on the market for £1.5 million in 2018.
