  • Rodney Hargrove, 20, was gunned down while still on the grounds of the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on State Road at around 2am Thursday
  • Hargrove had posted bail on Thursday, just a week after he had been detained for several charges which included theft and gun-related offenses
  • The young man had been waiting for family to come pick him up from the SEPTA bus station, roughly .3miles away from the prison on State Road
  • A dark-colored vehicle rolled up on the man, who proceeded to run back to the prison through the security gate
  • But the car sped past the gate, according to prison officials, and shot Hargrove at least 10 times

A man was shot and killed just moments after running back onto jail grounds shortly after his release from a Philadelphia jail.

Rodney Hargrove, 20, was gunned down while still on the grounds of the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on State Road at around 2am Thursday morning.

Blanche Carney, prison commissioner for the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, said that Hargrove had just been released from the jail at around 1.10am, CBS Philly reports.

Hargrove had posted $200,000 bail on Thursday, just a week after he had been detained for several charges which included theft and gun-related offenses.

The young man had been waiting for family to come pick him up from the SEPTA bus station, roughly .3miles away from the prison on State Road.

Inmates who are recently released are typically dropped off at the stop.

A dark-colored vehicle rolled up on the man, who proceeded to run back to the prison through the security gate.

But the car sped past the gate, according to prison officials, and shot Hargrove at least 10 times.

It is currently unclear why the gate was up but the prison has launched an investigation into the incident.

A guard was on duty at the time, the prison said.

‘It’s raised by the correctional officer on that post. For whatever reason, it was raised and the vehicle was able to go through that raised arm,’ Carney said.

‘We’re surveilling our video if we have any and we’ll cooperate fully with the police. If we determine there is video we’ll share it.’

There was no video at the bus stop.

‘There are some cameras on the grounds, but they say none of them are in the immediate area where this shooting took place,’ Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

‘So according to some of the staff here at the prison, they say there are no cameras that would have recorded anything, based on where the victim’s body and where the ballistic evidence is.’
