Pelosi calls Trump’s presidency the ‘dark period’ at COP26 – with AOC and Buttigieg in attendance

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called former President Donald Trump‘s term in office the ‘dark period’ as she took questions Wednesday at COP26 about U.S. efforts to curb climate change.

Pelosi is among a number of prominent American politicians who are attending the later portion of the Glasgow, Scotland conference – where President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama already made appearances.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is also there – and tweeted excitedly on Wednesday, ‘I finally got a hold of some Irn-Bru,’ a popular Scottish soda.

After addressing reporters at the White House on Monday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also traveled across the pond to the United Nations gathering.

During an appearance with climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech University, Buttigieg said he wanted to change the framing on how combating climate change is discussed.

Instead of pushing people to ‘save the planet,’ he said what climate activists are really trying to do is save lives.

‘The planet will be orbiting the sun long after we are gone,’ Buttigieg said, according to The New York Times. ‘The planet does not need us. We’re the ones who need the planet.’

Buttigieg also warned at the conference, ‘I think the legitimacy of political action itself is on the line.’

‘And yet the coordination that we see here I think demonstrates that the pathway is in front of us if we are ambitious enough to follow where that pathway leads,’ he said.

Pelosi pushed that ‘America is back’ during a press conference Wednesday with other U.S. Congressional leaders.

‘Our president was here,’ she noted. ‘There were many successes that were achieved in collaboration, not dictation or condescension but in collaboration with other countries,’ the California Democrat added.

‘Many of whom were ahead of us because we had, of course, the dark period,’ she continued. ‘Of four years preceding the president’s, President Biden’s administration coming into office.’

‘People will say what people will say, but we know that America is back,’ she added.

Pelosi talked about how some members of the U.S. Congress still showed up to COP25, which was held in Madrid, Spain in December 2019, even though Trump had signaled he was pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement.

Biden rejoined Paris on inauguration day.

Pelosi was also asked how Trump voters could be convinced to care about climate change.

‘If I may just say the most eloquent argument about climate change is the vicious storms that many of these people have suffered,’ she answered. ‘The wildfires that are existing in the west, the storms in the south and the east coast as well.’

Rep. Earl Blumenauer personally made that point when talking about what he experienced in his Oregon district over the summer.

‘It took on new urgency for me this year with the horrific events – there was one day this summer in Portland where temperatures in the heart of my district his 180 degrees. People died,’ the Democrat said.

‘We are in a race against time,’ he said.
