Paloma Faith credits Covid pandemic with sparking pop star baby boom

Paloma Faith credits Covid pandemic with sparking pop star baby boom after joining other new celebrity mothers including Ellie Goulding and two members of Little Mix

When creative types talk about a ‘fertile period’, they’re usually referring to their art.

But Paloma Faith is being quite literal on this occasion.

The 40-year-old singer believes the coronavirus pandemic has been a ‘relief’ for women in the music industry because it has allowed them to try for a baby.

Miss Faith gave birth to her second daughter with her partner artist Leyman Lahcine in February.

She said: ‘I genuinely think that women in my industry… have been working so hard, they haven’t been able to conceive.

‘I know I couldn’t – I miscarried a lot. And then everyone got pregnant during the lockdown. I think they had a bit more calm in their lives, a bit more time to have sex, a bit less stress.

‘Jessie Ware, the Little Mix girls, Ellie Goulding – is that a coincidence? I doubt it.’

Last week, Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 29, revealed she has given birth to twins just a day after her bandmate Perrie Edwards, 28, announced the birth of her first child with footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, also 28.

Miss Goulding, 34, gave birth to her son Arthur in April and Miss Ware, 36, had her third child last month.

Miss Faith, who is also an actress, told the Observer there was more ‘understanding’ about birth in the film industry compared with the music world.

But she added: ‘Though it’s difficult to know how much pressure is coming from external sources, and how much is coming from me.’

Miss Faith, who is from London, had her first daughter with Mr Lahcine in December 2016 and suffered postpartum depression. She became pregnant with her second after six rounds of IVF last year.
