Nikki Bella ‘sorry and embarrassed’ for joking that WWF trailblazer Chyna was ‘a man’ back in 2013

Total Bellas star Nikki Bella issued a formal apology on Monday to the late WWF trailblazer Chyna’s family after joking about her gender in a resurfaced clip from 2013.

During an episode of E! series Fashion Police, the 37-year-old WWE wrestler held up a picture of Chyna and said: ‘We don’t know if it’s a man or a woman.’

‘I want to sincerely apologize for a comment I made over eight years ago on Fashion Police. I am sorry and embarrassed by my 29 year old self, who offended Chyna and, in turn, hurt her family and others,’ Nikki (born Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace) tweeted.

‘I wish I could take it back. Please learn from me, it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings for a meaningless laugh. Chyna will always be remembered as an icon and pioneer who helped create the opportunities for women in wrestling that exist today. Thank you Chyna!’

A representative managing Chyna’s official Twitter account then publicly accepted Bella’s ‘sincere’ apology.

‘Please stop attacking her. Her apology has been passed on to the family also,’ the rep tweeted.

‘She has grown as a person. There is no hate or Ill will. Please build each other up not tear down. Chyna believed in forgiveness.’

The Bellas Podcaster was only 14 years old when Chyna (born Joan Marie Laurer) first rose to prominence as a member of D-Generation X in the WWF in 1997.

The University of Tampa grad’s ring name was intentionally ironic, named after fine delicate and fragile china – which the 5ft11in athlete was not.

Chyna – who also served in the Peace Corps – commanded $1M per year during her hey day and was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019.

In 2016, the WWE Intercontinental champ died, age 46, of an accidental overdose of alcohol and pills following appearances in Playboy, porno films, The Surreal Life, and Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

‘A few of the [wedding] venues were like, “We’re available!”‘ Bella told ET on June 4.

‘And what we just started saying is, “We’re so busy every day, and we completely remodeled the inside of her home. We haven’t even lived in it yet and we’re doing the outside and that takes so much work. We’re still not even done designing.” And so he and I both were just like, “Let’s get through the house. If it happens, it happens.” …So as of now, we have no plans, no day.’

The two-time WWE Divas Champion was famously engaged to John Cena in 2017 when she first partnered with Artem in the 25th season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

It’ll be the couple’s second time down the aisle after ending their respective marriages to Giselle Peacock and her unnamed high school sweetheart.
