New York Governor criticised for posing maskless backstage from a Broadway play

‘Where’s the social distancing or masking Kathy?’: New York Governor Hochul is criticised for posing maskless backstage from a Broadway play while advocating for children aged two to wear masks

  • Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul posed for maskless photo with Broadway stars
  • She shared the picture on Twitter and was quickly hit with backlash from people
  • Some demanded to know why she was not wearing a mask or socially distancing
  • Comes after she expanded New York’s mask mandate to include children aged 2

The Democratic Governor of New York has been criticized after removing posing maskless for a photo with stars from a Broadway production.

Kathy Hochul shared a photograph on Twitter on Monday in which she can be seen beaming alongside multiple cast members from the show Six.

She captioned the photo: ‘Have you heard? #BroadwayisBack! Bill and I had the absolute joy of seeing @SixBroadway Friday night – what’s on your Broadway bucket list?’

However, with a mask mandate currently in force across New York for public indoors settings, people were quick to criticize the Governor for the picture.

Author Jacob Airey responded and said: ‘Where’s the social distancing or masking, Kathy?’

While another said: ‘You can’t ask people to use mask in public and not follow your own advice. It kills your credibility. You must understand that.’

And a third asked: ‘Didn’t you have to wear a mask throughout the performance? Why not when you’re crammed in a stairwell with that many people?’

The criticism comes after Hochul expanded the scope of the state’s mask mandate to require all children from the age of two and above to wear a mask in child and day care centers.

People were quick to respond to Governor Hochul's Tweet, asking why she didn't wear a mask or socially distance from the Broadway stars

Hochul’s Broadway photo drew attention from some people who questioned why children so young need to wear masks if she does not follow the same rules.

One person said: ‘You make two year olds mask all day long. You should too.’

And another pointed out that ‘my teens wear masks eight hours a day’.

This isn’t the first time that Governor Hochul has been spotted at a public indoor space and not wearing a mask.

Last week she shared photos from inside a bar as she mingled with fans of the Buffalo Bills NFL team.

Captioning the image, she wrote: ‘Thanks to New Yorkers getting vaccinated, @BuffaloBills fans can cheer on our team and enjoy Labatt Blue together again! Keep it up, New York!’

And last week, Governor Hochul uploaded a series of photos of herself in a bar, not wearing a face mask, as she chatted to fans of the Buffalo Bills NFL team
