  • Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson from Cardiff bitten by the animal in Spain

This is the astonishing moment a hissing ladder snake bit a wildlife enthusiast as he rescued it from a road in Spain.

Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson, from Cardiff, was driving through the Almeria countryside in Diseminado Cabo Gata, Spain, with his girlfriend looking for snakes.

They saw what they thought was a stick at first but stopped the car when they realised it was a snake crossing the road.

In the footage, Mr Wilson and his girlfriend crouch by the ladder snake.

It is angry when they first see it and hisses, lunging at Mr Wilson as he goes to pick it up.

The snake has bitten him, and he zooms in on the bite, saying ‘I shouldn’t be scared.’

Girlfriend Serenity says: ‘that’s a nice shot of him’ after they finally caught sight of a snake, driving round looking for one for weeks.

Wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson, from Cardiff, was driving through the Almeria countryside in Diseminado Cabo Gata, Spain, on November 21 with his girlfriend looking for snakes. They stopped the car when they spotted a ladder snake who bit Mr Wilson as he picked it up

She described the snake as ‘feisty’ as it does not have a tail so they think it may have been caught in a fight in the past.

Mr Wilson was not put off by the serpent’s bites and carried on taking photos.

After a while, the snake drew a small crowd of people, who also took their own photos.

The couple described the snake as 'beautiful' and 'feisty' and noted it did not have a tail. They thought it may have been in a fight in the past

The couple called the snake ‘beautiful’ and as Mr Wilson picked it up again, it began to hiss.

His girlfriend said it was a windy day and they were near the beach so it was unusual to see the snake.

They released the snake out of the road and back into the direction it was heading at the end of the video.

Mr Wilson said: ‘We were extremely lucky to see this animal so late in the year. I was not expecting to see a snake so close to winter but nature always has surprises apparently. These animals are always amazing to see out in the countryside.’

As Mr Wilson picked the snake up again, it hissed ferociously before the couple then released it back into the direction it was heading

It is not the first time a snake has been spotted somewhere unusual.

A snake catcher retrieved a venomous serpent from a swimming pool water jet in Twin Waters, Queensland, in October.

The fearless reptile hunter fished the yellow-faced whip snake out of the jet, coaxing it out using an air blower.
