Michigan Democrats were heavily criticized over the weekend for telling parents that they are not ‘clients’ of public schools and that public education teaches kids what society ‘needs them to know.’
A Facebook post on Saturday shared by the state’s Democrats on their official page blasted the idea that parents should be involved in what public school teach their children. The post was taken down on Monday morning following heavy disapproval.
‘Not sure where this “parents-should-control-what-is-taught-in-schools-because-they-are-our-kids” is originating, but parents do have the option to send their kids to a hand-selected private school at their own expense if this is what they desire,’ the post read.
‘The purpose of public education in public schools is not to teach kids only what parents want them to be taught,’ the Michigan Democratic Party’s post added. ‘It is to teach them what society needs them to know. The client of the public school is not the parent, but the entire community, the public.’
The Michigan Democratic Party later deleted the post on Martin Luther King Day and retracted its original statement. It is unclear who wrote the post – but Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been blasted for what many see as meddling by her party members.
Michigan Democrats have been blasted by Republican officials in the state for telling parents to sign their kids up in private schools if they don’t like the education curriculum, adding that ‘the client of the public school is not the parent, but the entire community, the public’
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been pressured to respond to the original post, shared on Saturday before it was deleted on Martin Luther King Day
‘We have deleted a post that ignored the important role parents play—and should play—in Michigan public schools. Parents need to have a say in their children’s education, end of story,’ a following post on Monday read. ‘The post does not reflect the views of Michigan Democrats and should not be misinterpreted as a statement of support from our elected officials or candidates.’
Republican candidate for the upcoming March 8 gubernatorial election and former Detroit police chief James Craig said in a statement that parents are the ‘true stakeholders’ of their children’s’ education. He also labelled the state’s democrats’ post as ‘disgraceful’ and claimed that ‘they have an agenda of indoctrination, not education.’
‘Gov. Whitmer’s Democratic Party irresponsibly just said, “the client of the public school is not the parent, but the entire community, the public.” I vehemently disagree,’ he wrote in a tweet sharing his statement.
‘Parents that expect more out of their local public school and hold them accountable should not be told to get out their checkbook and hit the road. They have already opened their checkbooks by paying their taxes and deserve a high-quality education for their children,’ he added.
Former Detroit Police Chief and 2022 Republican gubernatorial candidate James Craig blasted the Democrats’ post and his rival, Governor Whitmer on Twitter on Sundasy
In his post, Craig says ‘the Michigan Democratic Party, under Gov. Whitmer, want to take even more control away from parents and give it to the government. As governor, I will never turn my back on the parents of our state. I will be there to support them and their children’
Craig’s (pictured) post was followed by criticism from other Republican officials from the state
The post was published as parents lash out at schools over COVID closures which are increasingly believed to have badly harmed children’s education.
Anger is also mounting over efforts to push critical race theory-inspired ‘equity’ lessons in schools – and Democrats’ attempts to paint anyone opposed to such lessons as domestic terrorists.
Other Republicans officials from Michigan followed Craig’s tone, fiercely criticizing the Democrats’ now-deleted post.
‘Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Democrat Party continue to be in the pockets of teachers unions and are so out of touch with Michiganders, they believe parents shouldn’t be involved in their children’s education,’ Michigan GOP communications director Gustavo Portela told Fox News Digital in a Monday statement.
‘Studies have shown time and time again that parent involvement leads to student success,’ Portela added. ‘Parent involvement is exactly what our students need now more than ever after a year of learning loss that will impact them for years to come thanks to Gretchen Whitmer’s shutdowns.’
Michigan’s GOP also denounced Democrats in a tweet shared on Sunday, saying their political rivals are ‘ready to indoctrinate your children with what “society needs them to know.”‘
Republican Governors Association (RGA) spokesman Chris Gustafson told Fox News in a Monday statement that incumbent Democrat Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer must act over the post’s condemnation, and cannot stay silent.
‘Gretchen Whitmer must condemn the Michigan Democrat Party or admit that she believes teachers unions should control public education, not parents,’ Gustafson said.
The Michigan GOP wrote on Monday that Democrats in Michigan are ‘ready to indoctrinate your children with what “society needs them to know.”‘
Many say that former Democratic nominee for Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe lost his seat last year after siding with educators instead of parents on what schools should be teaching children
The issue on public education reform was one that many say condemned former Democratic Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe’s to lose his state’s 2021 gubernatorial campaign against Republican Glenn Youngkin, who was recently inaugurated on Saturday.
McAuliffe raised eyebrows when he said in a debate that he did not believe parents should be telling public schools what to teach their kids, in a soundbite that proved to be the downfall of his campaign.
In September of last year, the former governor said: ‘I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.’
