MAFS: Elizabeth Sobinoff suffered from drug-induced schizophrenia

Former Married At First Sight star Elizabeth Sobinoff has revealed the harrowing consequences of a medical misdiagnosis when she was 16 years old.

The 30-year-old was left with serious mental problems as a result of the medication she was prescribed because doctors couldn’t work out what was wrong with her.

She told The Good Chat with Anita Anabel podcast things became so bad she lost touch with reality and her own mother had to become her carer.

Debilitating: Former Married At First Sight star Elizabeth Sobinoff has revealed the harrowing consequences of a medical misdiagnosis when she was 16 years old

‘I was sick for a very long time. I was on a disability pension for close to a decade,’ she explained.

‘I had a misdiagnosis at 16, so I got off those meds [eventually],’ she added.

Elizabeth was misdiagnosed after losing an alarming amount of weight as a teen, but the medication she was given left her sedated and disconnected from reality.

‘Doctors basically congratulated me for getting off them alive. Because it was so bad what happened to me, it was either I end my life or just live life,’ she said.

At the time she was on the medication, Lizzie was living with her parents in Newcastle and her mother, Gillian, was her carer.

‘My mum was my carer… because I lost a lot of senses being so numbed out on this medication,’ she said.

‘I lost everything: I lost my mind, I lost weight, I lost some bodily functions. The medicine sort of rewired my brain. I didn’t even look like me.

‘I had drug-induced schizophrenia, so I was schizophrenic but it’s weird because I can’t remember any of it as it was drug-induced.’

Elizabeth told fans on social media she had previously been on a disability pension

Lizzie said that during this period she was dependent on her group of girlfriends.

‘I was extremely underweight in my teenage years. I was basically a couch potato dribbling, completely numbed up. I was on hardcore medication,’ she added.

‘Light and sound and even movement were like nails on a chalkboard.’

Her mental state was so sensitive that she avoided loud public places like shopping centres for four years.

These days, Lizzie is no longer on the medication and has been correctly diagnosed.

She has Porphyria and an auto-immune condition, a mild form of Lupus that causes her body to attack itself, reports 9Now

But she’s still affected by her misdiagnosis.

‘Even now if there’s an escalator my balance is off.  My balance isn’t fully there because of the medication,’ she confessed.
