Lucy Lawless, 53, shares rare selfie and confirms she’s STILL close to Renee O’Connor

Lucy Lawless, 53, posted a heartwarming selfie to Twitter this week wearing a ‘ridic onesie’ with a reindeer theme.

In the tweet she revealed that the getup was a gift from her Xena: Warrior Princess co-star Renee O’Connor who played her implied love interest Gabrielle.

Gabrielle was Xena’s sidekick and although their romance was never made explicit on the show Lucy has since confirmed the characters were in love.

Lucy pulled a goofy face for the camera while posing for her new Twitter selfie in which she was wearing a reindeer-themed outfit.

‘Renee O’Connor sent me this ridic onesie for my birthday and it is so freakishly cold that I’m wearing it as pajamas down the farm. Best Jimjams eva (as long as I don’t sit too close to the fire.)Thanks, Ren!’ she wrote.

Lucy – who is originally from an Auckland suburb that her father was once mayor of –  may have been in New Zealand where it is midwinter.

She appeared to be sitting in a cozy-looking room of her home at night and her dog could be spotted snoozing on a rug behind her.

A couple of years ago Lucy confirmed to the Irish magazine Stellar that the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle was intended to be romantic.

‘That’s where the characters settled. At first, even [Renee and I] didn’t see that coming, but the producers and writers knew what they were doing,’ she said.

Lucy pointed out to the magazine that ‘it doesn’t even matter. Who cares anymore? Gay is part of normal. I know in other parts of the world this is still a new concept but, for god’s sake, we just want total equality.’

Renee confirmed to Fox News in 2017 that she and Lucy have remained pals as the years have gone by and said: ‘I feel really connected to her. She’s like a sister.’

She shared: ‘She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly talented so she’s always pushing herself to do more as a person. I always felt that way about her. It hasn’t changed. It’s only magnified through the years.’

Lucy achieved the height of her fame playing the title role on Xena: Warrior Princess which was filmed in her native country and aired from 1995 to 2001.

In fact she began playing the role as a recurring guest shot on the Kevin Sorbo series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys before getting her own spin-off.

As well as catapulting her to international fame Xena: Warrior Princess also changed her private life – she married its creator Robert Tapert and is with him to this day.

Lucy and Robert have two sons called Julius, 21, and Judah, 19, and she also has a daughter called Daisy, 32, by her first husband Garth Lawless.

Looking back on Xena: Warrior Princess to BUILD Series a couple of years ago she said: ‘What I love about it is that a lot of people took messages of self-empowerment and, that really had nothing to do with me.’

She added: ‘Like I was just saying the words that the writers wrote for me, but it seemed to have sparked positive change in so many people’s lives and I’m really grateful to have been part of something that did that.’

Currently Lucy stars as a private investigator on the crime dramedy My Life Is Murder which aired its first season in late 2019.

Although it began as an Australian show based in Melbourne the series is relocating to Auckland for its second season.

During an interview with AARP Magazine she credited yoga with keeping her in fine fettle physically as the years go by.

‘Now that I am the “older woman,” I want to encourage people that it’s never too late to start. You can get your mobility back and it’s such a beautiful part of voice and freedom,’ she shared with the publication in 2019.
