Love Island 2021: Fans defend first disabled contestant Hugo after he is labelled ‘too kind’ by Faye with no one stepping forward for him during coupling up

Hugo Hammond won the support of many Love Island viewers during Monday night’s first episode after he was labelled as ‘too kind’ by Faye Winter

The P.E teacher, 24, was the third boy to enter the villa and faced an awkward moment in the coupling up with none of the girls stepping forward for him.

While Hugo, who is the show’s first disabled contestant, chose to couple up with Faye, she later chose Brad McClelland to be her partner with viewers taking to social media to defend Hugo.

One viewer wrote: ‘Guys I actually love Hugo so much. He seems so kind and genuine and everyone needs to get off his case for being ‘being too shy’ otherwise I’m flying out to have a word with them’.

Another said: ‘Literally every girl on Love Island, “I go for personality”. Also every girl on Love Island: “Hugo is too kind”.’

Another wrote: ‘Need more respect for my boy Hugo, everyone pushing him away just because he’s ‘too nice’.’

Ultimately, Hugo was partnered with civil servant Sharon Gaffka following the coupling up who later said she didn’t think the pair had much chemistry as of yet.

Many fans also compared Hugo’s good-natured ways to Dr Alex George who took part in the fourth series and was also unlucky in love.

‘One viewer said: ‘Hugo reminds me of Alex. Tragic vibes. How can he be called too kind?’

Another added: ‘Hugo is a lot like Dr Alex bu I think this can only be a good thing. Dr Alex is prob one of the best things tio come out of Love Island. A genuine good guy.’

Hugo was also likened to series five’s Curtis Pritchard and the memorable scene when he told Amy Hart he likes to make everyone coffee in the morning.

Toby Aromolaran also suffered a blow during his entry to the villa as none of the girls stepped forward for him.

He also chose to partner with Faye before she ended up selecting Brad and he was then coupled with Kaz Kamwi.

Hugo is Love Island’s first disabled contestant, and revealed he doesn’t want to be defined by having clubfoot and insists producers chose him for his ‘personality.’

The Hampshire native told MailOnline viewers will notice he walks on his tip toes, which is more noticeable when he is barefoot, after being born with his ‘legs twisted and backwards.’

In an interview ahead of the show’s launch, Hugo revealed he had ’20 correction operations before the age of eight’ but ‘wouldn’t change it for the world because it’s part of who I am.’

He explained: ‘I was born with clubfoot; I was basically born with my legs twisted round and backwards. My hips were in and my leg bones were twisted and my feet were backwards.

‘I had around 20 correction operations before the age of eight, so that was pretty heavy and hardcore.

‘If I’m on my feet all day doing whatever I’ll want to sit down in the evening but I’m pretty sure that’s the same for everyone, obviously I can’t compare it.

‘People will probably notice in the villa I have slightly short Achilles tendons on my heel so I walk slightly on my tip toes, I look at it as natural swagger – some people look at it as a slightly different walk. Not too many people notice when I’m in shoes; it’s usually when I don’t have shoes on.

‘Day to day life it doesn’t really affect me too much – I’m very lucky. I wouldn’t change it for the world because it’s part of who I am and I’ve had some great experiences.’
