The pregnancy was a long time coming for the couple, who were expecting twins last year with a surrogate who unfortunately miscarried. It had been their ninth IVF attempt at starting a family.
‘Because of what we’ve been through the last four years, we were very cautious to get excited,’ Lance told People of learning about the pregnancy. ‘And it kind of sucks because when you find out you’re pregnant, you want to celebrate with your family.
‘You start planning their future in your head already, but we were so scared because we didn’t want to go through the pain again of losing them. We told our friends and family about the ninth week, when we finally felt comfortable. You think you’re going to jinx it or something.’
Lance also described their initial difficulties with IVF and surrogacy.
Aww! The couple ‘awwed’ at the sight of something inside their oven
‘When we went into IVF and surrogacy, we had no idea what it was all about. Pretty much everyone we’ve known had bad luck at the beginning. The first time they tried it, it just did not work,’ he said.
‘And I feel like that is such a common thing. And it’s great that we’re able to talk about this because a lot of times I would believe that couples feel very alone in that situation. But to know that other people are going through the same exact thing, it’s really comforting.’
He also reflected on the pain of learning their surrogate had miscarried last year.
Already the pop star was dreaming of a future with the children when the heartbreak occurred.

‘When you fast forward and be like, ‘Oh, what’s the wedding going to be like? Oh, if they’re going to have kids, I’m going to be a grandparent?’ Like you just automatically just put this in your head. And it’s very disappointing when that dream gets popped,’ Lance said.
Luckily the couple were eventually matched up with their current surrogate and egg donor in events Michael felt were ‘meant to be.’
‘We were just at a restaurant a couple months after the miscarriage and a friend of ours, [actor] Tayor Frey, who we hadn’t seen in a long time, happened to walk by the street, Michael recalled. ‘His agency introduced us to this one surrogate and she ended up being a great match. And the same with the egg donor.’
The couple struggled at times finding egg donors who were good genetic matches, but when it came to selecting whose sperm to use, Lance said the decision wasn’t difficult.
Aww: The pregnancy was a long time coming for the couple, who were expecting twins last year with a surrogate who unfortunately miscarried
‘We had been talking about having a family since we met. We’ve been together for 10 years. We always knew that if we were going to start the family, we wanted to go for twins just because he’s a twin, he’s a boy, girl twin. And he just loved that experience. I always wanted to have a twin, but we’re like, ‘Well, that’s so perfect because now we can do one of mine, one of yours.’ It was a no-brainer!’
‘When we did the egg retrieval, he fertilized half, I fertilized half. And luckily, they all turned out great,’ Michael added.
‘We took the two healthiest embryos, and put them in, and it perfectly fit with our plans.
Following the miscarriage last year, Lance said he would be open to adoption should their next IVF attempt fall through.
‘It’s been a very long process, years in the making. There have been a lot of ups and downs … way more downs than ups,’ Lance told Entertainment Tonight.
‘Nine did not work, so now we’re onto 10 and hopefully the next time will work. I’m trying not to worry about it. Of course, in a perfect world I would love to have my own,’ said Lance.
‘But if it’s not meant in the cards, then it’s not meant in the cards and there are plenty of kids who need adopting. So, I’m not opposed to going right ahead and adopting if this fails next time.’
Lance and Michael tied the knot at the Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in 2014 following a year long engagement and a total of three years together.
