Sony on Friday re-released the motion picture into 1,037 theaters, averaging $289 per theater in its second run for a total of around $300,000, Forbes reported Sunday.

The film first arrived in theaters April 1, making $73 million in domestic sales and $163 million worldwide in its first run, according to Box Office Mojo

The latest: The re-release of the Jared Leto film Morbius failed to resonate at the box office, garnering $300,000 in sales after Sony put it back in theaters after memes circulating about the movie went viral. Leto, 50, released a meme Friday in response to the attention

The movie, which stars Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, was panned by critics, scoring 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

In spite of the disappointing returns, the film was a popular topic of memes in the months since it was released, with thousands of social media users sarcastically praising the film, calling for a sequel and posting puns tying in with the name of the titular character.

Leto even got in on the fun in a tweet on Friday in which he was seen reviewing a script with the title, ‘Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time!’ with the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme playing out the bit.

In the wake of its disappointing box office returns this weekend, a number of Twitter users took to the platform to point out the irony.

‘Morbius being brought back to theaters just to bomb again is one of the funniest things that’s happened in the entertainment industry in years,’ one user wrote.

Another said that ‘the real challenge, if you’re willing to put in the work, is going to be tricking them into releasing Morbius a third time.’

Said one user: ‘the funniest possible outcome with morbius is it massively flops again, triggering another cycle of ironic memes, which causes another rerelease in theaters which also flops, etc, and so on. i call this the mörbius strip.’

Another user pointed out the unusual path the film took in returning to venues – as result of the memes – after its initial flop.

‘This morbius s*** played out really well because just as it was getting boring the joke got its punchline and all the people complaining about the jokes did it way too early,’ the user wrote, calling it a ‘litmus test for people who just wanna be contrarians.’

One user continued the ongoing calls for more content, writing, ‘Of course the Morbius rerelease failed. All our memes were about wanting a TV SHOW, Sony! Make us a Morbius TV show we’ll watch it for sure.’
