Jake Johnson tries to complete his dead mother’s bucket list in the trailer for Ride The Eagle

The trailer for Jake Johnson’s newest comedy Ride The Eagle was released earlier this week.

The 43-year-old New Girl star leads the movie as the bereaved son Leif, who’s coping with the death of his mother (played by Susan Sarandon) while moving into her cabin in the woods.

But he learns the secluded home comes with strings attached, as he has to complete a list of tasks written out by his mother shortly before her death if he wants to keep the cabin.

New role: Jake Johnson, 43, stars in and co-write the heartwarming comedy Ride The Eagle, which released its first trailer this week. He plays a son trying to honor his late mother

Sarandon’s character Honey is introduced at the start of the trailer via a video tape she recorded for her son.

‘Look at me, talking to you even though I’m dead. That’s trippy, right?’ she jokes.

‘Well I’m still here spiritually,’ she continues, as Johnson shakes his head in annoyance. ‘I’m right behind you… boo!’ she shouts to her own delight.

Then Johnson, who co-wrote Ride The Eagle with director Trent O’Donnell, is seen reading his mother’s will with a family friend.

‘I hereby leave my cabin to my son, provided he completes this list of tasks left for him at the cabin,’ he reads as his face drops.

The friend indicates that it won’t be any easy feat to complete all of his mother’s tasks when she asks him out of the blue if he owns a gun.

Leif finds a series of number envelopes as he explores the cabin, each with another task he has to complete.

‘I know I wan’t the mother you wish I’d been,’ Honey continues on her video tape. ‘I did not teach you enough stuff.’

Her first lesson: ‘Be the predator, not the prey.’

He tries to take her advice with a bare-chested fishing trip, but he seems to be the one being hunted when someone breaks into his cabin late at night.

‘I’m gonna miss you sweet girl,’ he muses forlornly, before sharing some overly sexual memories of Leif’s mother that turn his stomach.

The tasks turn romantic, as he’s forced to ‘call the one who got away’ to apologize.

His phone call to his ex-girlfriend Audrey (D’Arcy Carden) doesn’t seem to go well after she says she doesn’t remember him at all.

‘We dated for three years!’ he shouts, before she admits it was all a joke.

‘You’re so dumb, Leif! Oh buddy,’ she groans.

But there are more phone calls to come, suggesting the two still have unfinished business to explore.

While out in nature, he share’s his true feelings about his relationship with his late mother.

‘My biggest regret is that we didn’t spend any time together.’

The trailer ends on a comedic note, with Carl sharing more memories of Honey.

‘I’ll tell you a lot of stories about her. She had quite an appetite. She was a very, very sexual animal — and that’s probably not what her son wants to hear, I guess.’

Ride The Eagle will be released both in theaters and for digital rental starting on July 30.
