Ivanka Trump tours New Orleans community ravaged by tornadoes

Ivanka Trump traveled to Louisiana on Tuesday to tour a community in New Orleans that was ravaged by tornadoes last week while delivering meals to locals in need.

The former White House senior adviser was dressed casually in a white and navy striped button-up shirt, straight-leg jeans, and white sneakers to visit Arabi, which is located in St. Bernard Parish, east of New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward.

Ivanka, 40, shared photos of herself working and posing with other volunteers with Mercy Chefs, a Christian non-profit that provides prepared meals to disaster victims, volunteers, and first responders.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency in St. Bernard, Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes last Wednesday after two tornadoes ripped through the area the night before, killing at least one person.

There was widespread damage in Arabi, where one home was lifted into the air and dropped onto the middle of a street with a family inside.

Debris hung from electrical wires and trees amid destroyed houses. Power poles were down, forcing emergency workers to walk slowly through darkened neighborhoods checking for damage early in the morning.

The tornadoes were the latest natural disasters to devastate the region, which is still reeling from Hurricane Ida last August and Hurricane Katrina nearly 17 years ago.

Ivanka and her private security team were escorted by members of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office as she handed out meals with chef Jay Bachman of Mercy Chefs at the Aycock Barn in Old Arabi, according to a Facebook post shared by the police department.

She also gave out supplies with Pastor Trevor Truitt at Celebration Church’s St. Bernard/Ninth Ward Campus and delivered meals to residents’ homes while touring affected neighborhoods.

The post included photos of her handing out meals to a local family. She had a smile on her face as she hugged resident Joyce Lane, who pulled out her cellphone to show her something.

Mercy Chefs also shared images of Ivanka’s volunteer efforts on Instagram Tuesday.

‘Look who joined our volunteer team at our site in Louisiana to serve with us today!’ the charity wrote. ‘Thank you for your commitment to feeding those impacted by the recent tornadoes, @ivankatrump. We remain grateful for your support!’

Ivanka has mostly remained out of the public eye since she relocated from Washington, D.C. to Miami, Florida, with her husband, Jared Kushner, and their three children last year.

It’s unclear what the former businesswoman has in store for the future career-wise, but she has remained focused on helping provide food to families in need.

Earlier this week, she revealed on Instagram that she has been working with organizations to provide meals to people in Kyiv amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Ivanka, who converted to Judaism to marry her husband in 2009, also made a donation to Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank last Thanksgiving.

The JCS Kosher Food Bank is the only food bank in Miami-Dade County that offers kosher foods for those who observe Jewish dietary laws, according to its website. It provides food to more than 380 families nearly 100 Holocaust survivors.
