A young figure skater and her boyfriend died in a horror car crash with two other cars in San Marino on Saturday night.

Elly Mattiuzzo, 18, was driving from Borgo Maggiore towards Castello di Murata along the Sottomontana road in San Marino with Daniele Volanti, also 18, when their Fiat 500 drifted into the opposite lane.

It is not yet known how the young couple lost control of the car, but the Fiat is believed to have hit the guard rail on the opposite side of the road before an oncoming car smashed into it.

The Fiat 500 was already demolished before being hit for a second time by a third car.

Emergency services descended on the scene but the young couple were killed instantly.

She left her school in the town of Riccione, close to San Marino on the Italian coast where she met Volanti, just two years prior to her death.

After leaving school at 16, Mattiuzzo moved to Milan to live with family members and continued to pursue figure skating.

During her time in Milan, Mattiuzzo began performing with a synchronised figure skating group, the ‘Hot Shivers’, and became a key figure in the group.

‘Hot Shivers’ released a statement to the media, expressing their grief at the loss of Mattiuzzo.

‘We have good memories of her – she was a girl who loved being around her friends and had a great relationship with them, which is what our team is based around.

‘We can’t believe it – we are devastated.’

Italian police are conducting reconstructions of the crash on the Sottomontana road, which is notorious for being the site of several accidents, to try to ascertain exactly what happened.

However, it is believed that the young couple crashed the Fiat 500 after they strayed into the opposite lane and collided with the guard rail.

They were then hit by two cars in oncoming traffic – a Volkswagen Golf driven by a 19-year-old man from San Marino, and a BMW driven by another Sammarinese.

The young couple were found dead at the scene by emergency services, who extricated them from the twisted metal of their Fiat to rush them to hospital in vain.

The driver of the VW Golf sustained minor injuries and was also taken to hospital, while the BMW driver emerged from the crash unharmed.
