Harper Grae says that she is ‘overjoyed’ to have welcomed her ‘magical’ daughter Declan Monroe


Harper Grae welcomed her first daughter, Declan Monroe, earlier this month.

The 31-year-old country singer, who announced that she was expecting earlier this year, shares her baby with her wife, Dawn Gates.

The musician’s milestone comes after she previously experienced a miscarriage during her efforts to add another member to her and Gates’ family.

Grae spoke about giving birth to People, and she told the media outlet that, although the ordeal was harrowing at first, she was happy with how everything turned out.

‘Labor was the most intense yet magical experience of my life. Declan has a mind of her own, and once she decided to be earthside, she was here,’ she said.

The Love you Anyway singer also expressed that there were ‘a few scary moments during delivery’ and that her labor and delivery nursing staff remained ‘by my side through it all.’ 

The songwriter also gave a bit of insight regarding her daughter’s name and noted that she was inspired by several sources.

‘I wanted her name to share the initials of my wife: D.M.G. Declan was chosen after one of my favorite saints, St. Declan of Ardmore, and Monroe was chosen after my love and admiration for Marilyn Monroe,’ she said.

Grae previously spoke to People in March to announce that she and her wife were planning on welcoming a child in the near future.

‘Dawn and I are so very happy to announce that we will be expecting a little boy or girl into this world, summer 2021,’ the 30-year-old country star stated.

‘I have been nervous every step of the way, as I am sure many mothers whom after having had a miscarriage can relate,’ Harper continued.

‘Every doctor’s appointment, every trip to the bathroom, every workout, every meal — I am overly cautious.’

To close out her statement, the singer-songwriter stressed that ‘one thing is for sure: this little rainbow baby will be loved.’

The pair tied the knot in October of 2020 during a covid-friendly court ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee. 

Although this is will be Harper and Dawn’s first child together, Dawn also has a nine-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, who Harper noted will be ‘the best big sister.’

The Dear Daddy songstress revealed to People that she penned the lyrics to Still Your Mother shortly after learning she was pregnant with her and Gates’ impending baby.

‘I felt as though I was finally ready to tell this side of my story, once we knew we would be welcoming a little boy or little girl earthside,’ she explained.

Harper described Still Your Mother as ‘an illustration of an incredibly personal time in my life, which outlines not only my experience with having miscarried a child, but also looking toward, hopefully, growing a family after such a deep and silent loss. 

‘A hidden hurt that no one else felt, saw or knew about, but I carried this pain as close to me as I carried my own breath,’ Grae continued.

She also noted on her Instagram that she dedicates Still Your Mother to ‘every mother who has a rainbow baby or is waiting for their rainbow baby.’

To close out her interview, Harper revealed that she created a website, stillyourmother.com, for others to share their own miscarriage/pregnancy loss stories.  

She was recently named one of CMT’s Next Women of Country 2021 standouts, following the success of her hit single Muddy Water.

The Alabama native moved to eventually moved to Nashville, Tennessee to commence her singing career, which involved her changing her name from Shanna Henderson to Harper Grae.
