‘To actually find people that truly love you is quite difficult’: Ed Sheeran reveals he splashed out on holidays for his close school pals – and reflects on a year since daughter Lyra was born

Ed Sheeran revealed on Kiss FM on Friday that he has splashed out on holidays for his school friends – all of whom he still remains close to.

Speaking to hosts Jordan Banjo and Perri Kieley, the Bad Habits hitmaker, 30, admitted that it is ‘quite difficult’ to find people that ‘truly love you’ – and despite making a selection of friends since leaving school, his school pals are ‘the ones.’

‘The beginning of my career, I sort of drunk the cool aid a little bit and I was like, “I moved to LA and I got famous friends”, blah, blah, blah and blah – and I sort of lost touch with them.

‘But when I came back home when I was 22, I just made a conscious effort and I was like, “I’m paying for a holiday twice a year and you guys are gonna come with me and that’s when we’re gonna bond”.

‘And, you know, we went on like these amazing holidays and all hung out as friends,’ he revealed.

The star’s appearance on the radio show was in celebration of the release of his brand new single Shivers, but he hasn’t just been filling his schedule with music – his daughter Lyra turns one soon.

Of her milestone birthday, Ed said: ‘It has completely flown, but this is what every parent says.

‘I’ve got a long tour coming up so I think by the time that she’ll probably start primary school we’ll have been around the world like three or four times – so I think it’s probably time to settle and have a normal childhood I think.’

Ed also spoke to Zoe Ball on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday about his little girl, sweetly revealing their ‘vinyl breakfast’ routine – the doting father picks a record and they listen to it in full whilst Lyra eats her porridge.

On Kiss, the successful star, who marked ten years since his debut album + this week, also spoke candidly about the prospect of replicating past success.

‘When you’re coming out with new music and there’s a song that’s streaming four times the amount of the number two song… you have to basically do better than everyone else and then better than the person that is doing better than everyone else.

‘So I looked at that and I was like, I’ll be happy if it [Bad Habits] goes top 10. Thankfully did a bit better, but you can never take these things for granted,’ he admitted.

Ed’s new single Shivers is out now, which he told Zoe Ball he was ‘glad’ about: ‘There’s probably like 17 different versions of that song. I’m glad it’s finally out and stamped and that’s it… because it’s lived in so many different worlds.’
