Driver high on meth veers off Utah road and kills two 3-year-old boys who were playing

Two Utah toddlers were killed by a man who crashed into a horse stable where they were playing at 100 mph while high on meth, police said.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said that shortly before Monday’s fatal car accident, 25-year-old Kent Cody Barlow of Eagle Mountain was allegedly driving recklessly, weaving and drifting into oncoming traffic at nearly 100 mph before running a stop sign.

Barlow’s car, which had three passengers inside, then veered off the road and  crashed through a vinyl rail fence, then smashed through two sections of a five-rail steel pole fence, police said.

Inside the corral an out of control car blasted through were two three-year-old boys, identified by family friends as Odin Ratliff and Hunter Jackson, playing with toy trucks

His vehicle then crashed through a corral fence before hitting a large cement block and launched into the air, landing upside-down on a horse stable, nearly 345 feet from where it left the road, totally destroying the car.

Inside the corral it blasted through were two three-year-old boys, identified by family friends as Odin Ratliff and Hunter Jackson, playing with toy trucks who were hit by Barlow’s car as it continued into the stables.

The toddler were both run over and flew 75 feet from where they were playing, dying instantly, police said.

Following the crash Barlow was airlifted to a local hospital to be treated for bruises and abrasions and the three other passengers were treated at nearby hospitals.

Investigators later found evidence that Barlow was impaired during the crash and a drug screening tested positive for methamphetamine and he was arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide, DUI with criminal negligence, possession of a controlled substance, DUI with serious bodily injury by negligent operation, DUI with personal injury, reckless driving, failure to operate within a single lane, failure to obey traffic control devices, and speeding.

This is not Barlow’s first run in with the law- the 25-year-old has a long list of criminal convictions and drug-related charges and was on parole at the time of the accident, ABC4.com reported.

In 2019 Barlow faced multiple felony charges after he was arrested for stealing a police vehicle with two guns inside and leading police in a car chase, KTVX reported.

On Tuesday family friends created a GoFundMe which within hours has nearly reached it’s $20,000 goal to help cover funeral costs for the families of the young boys who were friends their entire lives.

‘Our hearts ache for the Ratliff and Jackson families! Odin Ratliff and Hunter Jackson tragically lost their lives at the age of 3 on Monday, May 2,’ the fundraiser said. ‘Playing, innocently in the sand with their toy trucks, these boys have been best friends from the start loving to play in the dirt while at Cedar Valley Stables. The stables have always been a second home to these boys.’

‘Due to reckless and under the influenced driving, the families of these boys are now mourning the loss of their little ones,’ the fundraiser added. ‘Please help to raise awareness of this situation so we can help these two families with funeral costs. We will be taking the proceeds and dividing it equally between the two families. Nothing can help with this kind of loss and our hearts all ache. Please take a moment to donate and share so we can help ease these grieving families at this time.’
