Designer Zuhair Murad faces furious backlash for dressing Chrissy Teigen for a UNICEF gala

Zuhair Murad is facing fierce backlash for dressing Chrissy Teigen for a UNICEF gala in Italy amid the model’s social media scandal, as critics slam the celebrity designer for ‘supporting the bully.’

Teigen, 35, has been wearing Murad’s designs for years, and in the photos shared on his eponymous brand’s Instagram on Sunday, she is modeling a beaded caftan gown with feathers while posing with her husband, John Legend.

‘Chrissy Teigen and her husband, showing off her glittering look, wore a white beaded caftan gown with a plunging neckline and feathered hem from the #ZMCouture Spring 2021 Collection at the #LVRxUNICEF gala in Capri, Italy,’ the label captioned the images.

More than 50,000 people liked the post, but some fans were outraged by the Lebanese designer’s choice to dress Teigen after it was revealed that she bullied Courtney Stodden and others online.

‘Chrissy is not the right choice for your brand,’ one person wrote, while another added: ‘A big NO to bully Chrissy.’

‘Love your brand, but supporting the bully is not acceptable,’ someone else agreed.

A number of critics also threatened to ‘unfollow’ the designer over his decision to continue to work with the cookbook author.

‘Unfollowed, a brand that supports bullies and people who tell kids to commit suicide has low moral standards,’ one Instagram user commented.

It’s shameful, if you don’t care about respect and mental health of people, I don’t see a reason to respect your brand, unfollow,’ someone else explained.

Murad also dressed models Lais Ribeiro and Daniela De Jesus Cosio for the gala hosted by the luxury retailer Luisa Via Roma in Capri to raise funds for the Italian arm of UNICEF.

Daily Mail has reached out to Zuhair Murad for comment.

Teigen has been the target of backlash since the abusive tweets she sent in 2011 resurfaced online, including one that urged a then 16-year-old Stodden to kill themself.

Stodden, who came out as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, recently claimed that Teigen has yet to personally apologize for her actions. However, Teigen told TMZ a few weeks ago that she ‘reached out to’ Stodden via text.

When Teigen was asked about Addison Rae facing backlash for introducing herself to Donald Trump at a UFC fight, she replied: ‘I have decided I’m not getting involved in anyone’s s**t ever again.’

Lindsay Lohan was also the subject of an insensitive tweet by Teigen, who wrote in January 2011: ‘Lindsay adds a few more slits to her wrists when she sees emma stone.’

Old tweets from 2013 in which she described nine-year-old Oscar nominee Wallis as ‘cocky’ and called Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham, then 21, a ‘whore’ have also resurfaced.

Designer Michael Costello accused Teigen and her stylist Monica Rose of blacklisting him from the industry, which spawned his own suicidal ideations.

He claimed the pair went ‘out of their way to threaten people and brands that if they were in any shape or form associated with me, they would not work with any of them.’

Meanwhile, Cameroonian singer Dencia claimed that Teigen had pushed her twice at the 2016 Grammy Awards because the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star thought her assistant had recorded her on his phone.

Teigen attempted to right a few of her wrongs with an apology shared to Medium in June — which was her first time speaking out since taking a social media hiatus after a host of bullying allegations came to light.

‘Hi all. It has been a VERY humbling few weeks,’ she wrote. ‘I know I’ve been quiet, and lord knows you don’t want to hear about me, but I want you to know I’ve been sitting in a hole of deserved global punishment, the ultimate “sit here and think about what you’ve done.”

‘Not a day, not a single moment has passed where I haven’t felt the crushing weight of regret for the things I’ve said in the past.’
