David Beckham looks dapper ahead of Inter Miami’s first match of season against LA Galaxy

He signed a five-year deal and moved to America back in 2007 to play for LA Galaxy.

And David Beckham will undoubtedly be cheering for the other side during Sunday’s first match of the MSL season as his club Inter Miami hopes for a win.

The club owner and president of soccer operations, 45, looked extremely dapper in a black suit and sunglasses as he took to the pitch before kick off.

David cut a suave figure in his tailored suit which boasted the team’s emblem on the breast pocket and was styled with a crisp white shirt and a club tie.

He also stole a moment to chat on the phone, appearing to be on FaceTime as he held up the device and showed off his personalised Inter Miami case.

The sportsman was also seen chatting to others at his team’s home, the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, and appeared to be in good spirits pre-match.

Inter Miami finished 10th out of 14 teams in the Eastern Conference during their debut season in 2020. The team lost 3-0 against Nashville in the first round of the play-offs under former head coach Diego Alonso.

Inter Miami are now coached by David’s former Manchester United team-mate Phil Neville as they approach their second season in the MLS.

Former England Women’s coach Neville was appointed in January, and his side will begin their season against LA Galaxy on Sunday.

The match comes after it was reported that Inter Miami are expected to face sanctions after a Major League Soccer investigation found they ‘broke budget regulations’ when they signed France midfielder Blaise Matuidi last year.

MLS have determined that when French World Cup winner Matuidi, 34, joined from Juventus in August 2020, he should have been a designated player due to the size of his salary.

Instead, as reported by the BBC, Inter Miami listed him as a Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) player and saved their three designated player slots for Gonzalo Higuain, Rodolfo Pizarro and Matias Pellegrini.

This effectively gave the team four ‘designated players’ last season rather than the permitted three; MLS have said the final results of the investigation, including sanctions, will be announced in due course.

Designated players’ wages do not count towards the MLS salary cap and each team is allowed two-high priced designated players whose wages exceed the league’s salary cap.

They are also allowed a third if the club made a $150,000 payment (£108,000) to the league split among the other sides.

An investigation by the MLS is said to have discovered that Matuidi was paid above the limit for a TAM player and should have been classed as a designated player, meaning Inter Miami broke the rules when they registered him.

Known as the ‘Beckham rule’ the designated players laws were introduced when the former England captain joined Los Angeles Galaxy back in 2007.

Beckham was given at the time an option to purchase an expansion franchise, later becoming a co-owner of Inter Miami who played their first game in March 2020.

It has been a busy week for David, with the father-of-four also celebrating his wife Victoria’s 47th birthday over the weekend.
