Is that Damon Albarn going past in a Blur? Singer passes his driving test at 52 and buys a 130mph Range Rover worth £65,000
With an annual insurance premium of up to £7,000, a swanky Range Rover Sport is beyond most rookie motorists. But that hasn’t posed a problem for multi-millionaire singer Damon Albarn, who has only just passed his driving test in his 50s.
The Blur star decided to learn to drive to make it easier to travel between London and his very big house in the country.
And the £65,000 car – which goes from 0 to 60mph in eight seconds and has a top speed of 130mph – should get him to his property in Devon in no time.
Damon Albarn, pictured, spent £65,000 to buy this Range Rover Sport after passing his driving test shortly before his 53rd birthday, in order to make it easier for him to get between his homes in Devon and London
The Blur frontman, pictured, has been spending more time at his country home since the start of the lockdown and being able to drive will make the journey far easier than public transport
A friend of the singer, whose hits include Parklife and Country House, said: ‘Damon loved his time in Devon during lockdown and would love to spend much more time there. But getting there on public transport would be a nightmare, so he decided to take the plunge and finally learn to drive himself around.’
The singer has accumulated an estimated £10 million fortune thanks to his success with Blur and virtual band Gorillaz.
It is understood that he practised his driving with Suzi Winstanley, his partner of 24 years and mother to their daughter Missy, 21. He passed his test shortly before celebrating his 53rd birthday.
Albarn said recently that spending lockdown at his bolthole was ‘wonderful’, adding: ‘I got to know all the local people – the butcher, grocer, fishmonger. That’s really where I see myself now.’
