Cher belts out updated version of The Golden Girls theme song for Betty White tribute special


Cher released a clip of her singing an updated version of The Golden Girls theme song to her Twitter account on Friday afternoon.

In the video, the 75-year-old hitmaker belted out the popular television program’s intro track while spending time at The Golden Girls Stage 5 in Hollywood, where the show was regularly taped.

The new version of the song will be used during NBC’s upcoming Betty White Tribute special, which is set to air next week.

Cher also added a short message to her post that simply read: ‘Every Friend is Golden.’ 

The Golden Girls’ theme song, entitled Thank You For Being A Friend, was originally written by Andrew Gold, who also recorded it in 1978.

A later version of the track, which was performed by Cynthia Fee, was ultimately used for the program.

The show ran from 1985 until 1992 and also starred Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty.

The program received much critical acclaim throughout its run and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twice.

The upcoming tribute to White is set to feature messages from numerous celebrities, including Bryan Cranston, Ellen DeGeneres and Tracy Morgan.

In addition to the performers, president Joe Biden will also provide a statement for the special. 

The much-lauded actress passed away at the age of 99 after suffering a stroke last month.

NBC released a statement where they expressed via People that the special would showcase the late comedian’s impact on the entertainment industry. 

It read: ‘Co-stars, friends, admirers and those who shared special moments with White recount their favorite memories and reveal untold stories to commemorate the life and legacy of the trailblazing television star.’

It was also revealed that the actress’ personal side would be shown through exclusively obtained footage.

‘The telecast will include clips and never-before-seen footage that best capture White’s irreverent tone, spirit and impeccable comedic timing that are a hallmark of her decades-long career,’ they said. 

White’s longtime agent and close friend, Jeff Witjas, previously gave a statement where he expressed via People that he would mourn the performer’s passing. 

‘Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever. I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much,’ he said.

He made a point of stating that the actress was likely comforted by the thought of reuniting with her deceased spouse around the time of her death. 

‘I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again,’ he stated.

The upcoming special is set to air on January 31st, exactly one month after White passed away.
