Bungling Starbucks armed robber is undone by lousy paper bag before taking a shot at cops

This is the moment a Starbucks robber in Ohio was sabotaged by the coffee shop’s weak paper bags before he shot at officers and got arrested on Monday.

Dominque M. Hullum, 30, of Cleveland, was arrested after a failed robbery at a Starbucks in the 27100 block of Lorain Road in North Olmsted.

He shot at officers as he tried to escape before being taken into custody in a nearby residential area, authorities said.

Hullum reportedly entered the store around 8am on Monday, ordering people to get on the ground and instructing staff to give him money.

Surveillance video from the Starbucks shows a man who appears to be Hullum pointing a gun at two distraught cashiers as they remove the cash registers’ trays and put the money inside paper bags.

But when Hullum tried to exit the store, the lousy paper bags gave in due to the weight of the money he planned to rob.

The thief can then be seen scrambling to put the money inside a white plastic bag that would also break as he tried to escape police.

Police dashcam video shows the suspect running across the Starbuck’s parking lot with the bag of money in hand before being hit by a police car.

Hullum shoots at the officer and when his bag breaks for a second time, he decides his freedom is more important than the money and runs away from police.

He was later arrested, but not without some confrontation with police, in which he and a North Olmsted police officer were injured.

Both were taken to the hospital and the officer was treated for minor injuries and discharged the same day. Police have not commented on Hullum’s condition.

He has been charged with aggravated assault and North Olmsted police said they might bring additional charges.

‘The suspect encountered a police officer at Dover Center Road and Brookpark Extension and fired several shots at the officer,’ North Olmsted police officials said in a press release.

‘One of our cars was hit by gunfire, it took a round to the hood of the car and the drivers side window was shattered,’ Sgt Dan Barrett told Cleveland19

‘Our officer jumped out of the car and returned fire once he started taking fire from the suspect.’

Hullum then reportedly got into a car and traveled north on Dover Center Road.

He was followed by numerous members of the North Olmsted Police Department before finally stopping behind a residence on Kingston Circle, where both parties opened fire, police said.

Officers from North Olmsted and Westlake were eventually able to take him into custody, the departments said in a statement.

During the confrontation, one officer suffered minor injuries. Hullum was also injured, but police has not disclosed whether he is still receiving treatment at the hospital.

‘The guy had no regard for safety, for anyone, he’s firing on officers so that tells you his mental state, he could care less,’ Barrett said.

Hullum has a long criminal history and has been arrested at least eight times dating to 2010.

When he was just 19, Hullum was charged with felony in fourth degree after attacking a firefighter. In 2014, he was arrested for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and the next year he was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

His latest arrest before Monday’s incident was in 2021, when he was charged with an aggravated felony following a 2016 arrest for aggravated robbery.
