Anna Maxwell Martin says ‘rubbery face’ stops her getting recognised

‘I’m so haggy and baggy people just can’t tell it’s me!’ Line Of Duty’s Anna Maxwell Martin says having a ‘rubbery face’ stops her getting recognised but insists she feels ‘fine and confident’

She won huge praise for her role as frosty DCI Patricia Carmichael in Line Of Duty.

Yet Anna Maxwell Martin was showing a wholly different side to herself in a stunning new shoot for Grazia, as she posed up a storm in a series of chic shots.

The actress, 44, spoke about getting recognised saying: ‘I think there must be something about my face that’s quite rubbery and it morphs into the background…. – maybe I look so haggy and baggy in real life that people just can’t tell.’

Anna looked sensational in the new shoot in which she showed off her lithe legs in a pretty blue shirt dress with paint splattered adornments.

She also showed off her tiny waist in a stylish coord comprising a shirt tied at the waist and high-waisted trousers with a monochrome hue.

Anna has won huge praise for her roles in Motherland and Bleak House yet found herself most prominent in the spotlight after Line Of Duty.

Despite being a well-known TV face, the actress, who is mother to daughters Maggie and Nancy with her ex-husband Roger Michell, insists she can remain under the radar due to her ‘rubbery face’.

She said: ‘I don’t really get recognised a lot, maybe a bit more recently, but that’s probably because Line Of Duty’s watched by 10 billion people…

‘I think there must be something about my face that’s quite rubbery and it morphs into the background. And also, they help you out a lot, hair and make-up – maybe I look so haggy and baggy in real life that people just can’t tell.’

Speaking about her confidence levels, she said: ‘I’m not mega-confident about my face or anything like that, but I really do like clothes and I work with [stylist] Alexandra Mann, and she’s amazing at getting weird stuff and putting it on me…

‘Weirdly I feel fine and confident. I do really enjoy that side of it.’

On her face, she went on: ‘No, I don’t really feel anything about my face. In acting you’ve got to have a face that’s memorable, whatever that might mean.’

Speaking about social media, Anna said: ‘My friend forced me on to Instagram when I was quite drunk. I’m not hugely interested in people constantly posting or looking like they have super-idyllic lives…

‘I’m bringing up two girls so it’s not massively healthy, is it? But I like the other bumf, like, “You like floral wallpaper, so we’re going to bombard you with chintzy sofas.”’

Following the roaring success of Line Of Duty, she spoke about the widely-discussed prospect of another series, saying: ‘I wouldn’t know and I would never be told…

‘Until I was in the car and popped on the plane to Belfast [where it’s filmed], I wouldn’t know… I’m not in with the in-crowd there and I’m not sure the in-crowd even knows.’
