America’s Got Talent musician Jay Jay Phillips dead at 30 from COVID-19; rocker was unvaccinated

America’s Got Talent star Jay Jay Phillips has died following a battle with COVID-19, according to a report from TMZ on Friday. He was 30-years-old.

Phillips’ body was reportedly found by his mom and girlfriend on Thanksgiving who had gone to his home to check on him.

A relative of Phillips told the outlet that the rocker was unvaccinated but was coming around to possibly getting the jab when he fell ill with coronavirus.

Phillips’ band, Metal Maffia, made the official announcement Tuesday.

‘It is with great sadness we inform you all of the loss of our bandmate/brother/and friend @jayjayrocks,’ the band said in a statement. ‘It still doesn’t feel real and we would give anything to change it. Please respect the family, as well as our wishes as we take our time to grieve and process this detrimental loss,’ the band wrote. ‘We miss you brother, every second of every minute, of every day. Thank you for teaching us all to laugh a little more. Rock in Paradise.’

Phillips and Metal Maffia released five albums together.

The day before Thanksgiving, Phillips seemed to take a turn for the worst and despite being urged by loved ones to get to a hospital, he stayed home to rest, it was reported.

He had told family members in his last conversation with them that he just needed more rest.

His father, who Phillips was living with at the time, is currently hospitalized and on a ventilator himself, TMZ said.

Phillips, who is most recognizable by his wild rock star hair, first gained fame performing on his electric keyboard in season four of America’s Got Talent, his first of two stints on the show.

He was eliminated in the audition round that season but returned the show in season 12 making it through to the Judge Cuts round before being cast off in the quarterfinals.

Phillips hailed from Cleveland, Ohio and had been a lover of music for most of his life, performing in rock band contests with his band Hysteria while in high school, according to a local news outlet.

People took to social media after the news broke, many begging for those unvaccinated to get the jab in the wake of Phillips’ death.

‘Dead at 30. Get vaccinated. Seriously,’ wrote one person on Twitter reacting to the death of the rocker.

‘This could have been prevented,’ wrote another.

‘COVID kills. Vaccination saves lives. Better chance 2 survive get vaccinated!’ said another.

Season 16 of AGT wrapped up in September with Dustin Tavella, a magician, taking home the top prize followed by aerialist Aidan Bryant in second place and stand-up comedian Josh Blue in third.

The more intense spin-off of AGT, America’s Got Talent: Extreme was forced to halt production in October following a terrifying on set accident that nearly killed a contestant.

Stuntman Jonathan Goodwin was feared to have been killed when a stunt rehearsal, which was captured on film, went horribly wrong.

The video clip, shot at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, begins with the professional stuntman hanging in midair as two cars are seen coming together.

The stunt was supposed to see the 41-year-old Welsh escapologist free himself and fall underneath the vehicles before they collided. However, he fell nearly 40 feet, missed the airbag and landed on his dead.

A 911 call revealed that he was unresponsive and close to death immediately following the incident. His current condition is unknown.
