Alex Murdaugh is being investigated by FBI for ‘financial crimes’ as he faces claims

Jailed lawyer Alex Murdaugh is being investigated by the FBI for alleged financial crimes.

Murdaugh, who resigned from the firm of Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick (PMPED) about two months ago after allegedly stealing from them, is said to have used the firm’s stationary in a plan to steal $4.3 million that was owed to the family of housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, who died in his home in 2018.

The suggestion of a possible FBI investigation was made by Eric Bland, one of the attorneys representing the sons of housekeeper.

The FBI’s Columbia Field Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina have not confirmed or denied the existence of an investigation.

A lawyer for Murdaugh, Jim Griffin, also told The Post & Courier how he took part in a conference call involving federal prosecutors who were looking to see if he would cooperate with any investigation.

Meanwhile, in a civil suit, a South Carolina judge is to hear three separate motions on Friday that have been filed by the Sattersfield sons together with the mother of Mallory Beach who was killed in a boat crash and surviving passenger, Connor Cook.

The suits are asking for courts to freeze Alex and his son’s 26-year-old Buster Murdaugh’s financial accounts.

The court motions in the cases, all filed last week, said they fear Murdaugh is trying to hide millions of dollars they could possibly collect in their lawsuits by shifting money between unknown accounts and potentially selling off property and a boat after he turned all his affairs over to his surviving son, Buster.

Murdaugh has been charged with illegally pocketing nearly $3 million worth of insurance settlements that was supposed to go to Satterfield´s estate.

At his bond hearing, prosecutors detailed how Murdaugh stole the money by diverting it to his accounts. They said he then paid off a $100,000 credit card bill, transferred more than $300,000 to his father and $735,000 to himself.

The lawsuits noted well over half the settlement money remained unaccounted for in the prosecution’s presentation.

Buster, who is now his father’s power of attorney was allegedly spotted at a casino in  Las Vegas last week just as his dad was being denied bond by a South Carolina judge over the charges related to insurance settlements that occurred after their housekeeper accidentally tripped and fell, killing her in 2018.

The lawsuits noted well over half the settlement money remained unaccounted for in the prosecution’s presentation.

‘Certainly, if Alex Murdaugh is capable of apparently diverting stolen assets in this manner, he is also capable of diverting legitimate assets,’ the attorneys wrote in their lawsuits.

Murdaugh, 53, was first arrested September 16 and was accused of trying to arrange his own death so Buster Murdaugh could collect a $10 million life insurance policy. That same day, the father signed a power of attorney for all his affairs over to his son, according to court records.

‘While the power of attorney may have some legitimate purposes for someone unable to manage their own finances, the power of attorney also provides a mechanism for Buster Murdaugh to transfer, sell or otherwise handle Alex Murdaugh’s assets in a manner that diverts the assets,’ the motion said.

On September 23, someone who owed a nearly $1 million mortgage to Alex Murdaugh from 2013 paid it off. Records don’t indicate how much money changed hands.

State police first started investigating Alex Murdaugh and his family in June, when he found his wife and other son shot to death at their home. No one has been charged in that case.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigations concern millions of dollars which appear to be missing from the PMPED law firm.

The similar motions in the three lawsuits include several documents: a photo of Buster Murdaugh that lawyers said was taken in October at a Las Vegas casino, the Venetian; a nearly $1 million mortgage a property owner paid off to Alex Murdaugh; an online listing asking $114,000 for Murdaugh’s boat; and a nearly two-year-old unpaid tax bill that could lead to the auction of Murdaugh’s beach home on Edisto Island.

‘Alex Murdaugh has engaged in repeated dishonesty, deception and fraud. He has shown that he will go to extraordinary lengths to misappropriate, steal, transfer or otherwise dispose of money in a manner that benefits him or his family, with complete disregard for the interests of third persons,’ the lawyers wrote in their motions.

The SLED are also looking into an alleged botched suicide plot that took place on Labor Day weekend which might have seen Buster collect on a $10 million life insurance policy had it been successful.

Two of the lawsuits involve a fatal February 2019 boat crash where Paul Murdaugh was charged after investigators said he was driving drunk and recklessly.

At the time of his death, Paul was still facing charges including boating under the influence charges.

The suits were filed by the family of a 19-year-old woman killed and a man on the boat who said the Murdaugh family tried to pin him as the boat’s driver.

Several other investigations into Alex Murdaugh by SLED were open following the unsolved murders of his wife, Maggie, 52, and their 22-year-old son, Paul.

The pair were shot to death on the grounds of the family’s hunting estate in June.

Murdaugh insists he had nothing to do with the deaths. Murdaugh said he returned to their rural Colleton County home to find them shot to death. Tight-lipped state police have neither named any suspects nor ruled anyone out.

‘As a result of the brutal murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh on June 7, SLED’s initial priority was finding anyone responsible for their deaths. During the course of the double murder investigation, SLED agents have uncovered other potential crimes that warrant further investigation,’ SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby said to Fox News.

‘SLED agents continue to work diligently to bring justice to all victims in these cases. As I have previously stated, our agents remain committed to following the facts no matter where they lead us,’ SLED Chief Mark Keel said in a statement. ‘I have been in contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina. From very early on in this investigation SLED has utilized federal resources as needed. We will continue to call upon our federal partners as their assistance is needed to successfully investigate and prosecute specific aspects of these cases.’

Murdaugh remains in jail without bond on the charges he stole money from his late housekeeper’s estate. A judge last week asked for a report on Murdaugh’s mental state before considering whether to set bond.
