Red Hawk Casino to Add Entertainment Center, Hotel by Fall 2022

The owners of Red Hawk Casino in Shingle Springs, California have submitted an environmental impact report with El Dorado County officials as they look to add a 75,000-square-foot entertainment center to the existing gambling facility.

California has gaming compacts with 75 tribes and 63 of these currently operate 66 casinos around the state. The owners of Red Hawk Casino, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, are among the tribes that have signed a casino gambling deal with state lawmakers.

Under the terms of the tribe’s compact with California, it does not need approval from its host county to pursue an entertainment center. However, tribal officials are required to prepare and submit a tribal environmental impact report that assesses the potential off-reservation impact of the planned expansion of Red Hawk Casino.

The tribe has submitted the report not long ago and it has been released for a 45-day public review. Tribal officials will also need to negotiate with El Dorado County in good faith to reach an agreement over the mitigation of environmental effects from the project as well as the mitigation and compensation of any impact to public services and safety, including law enforcement, fire protection, and medical services, among others.

The county is expected to initiate those negotiations after reviewing the environmental impact report.

The Planned Expansion

The new entertainment center will be located above the northern half of the casino’s existing parking garage. As mentioned above, it would spread over 75,000 square feet of space.

The new venue will include a bowling alley, virtual reality gaming suites, indoor go-carting, meeting rooms, and a bar.

In addition to the entertainment center, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians also plans to expand the parking garage and increase the number of parking spaces available to 3,600 from 3,040.

Late last month, the tribe broke ground on a separate expansion project – a 150-room hotel at the existing casino. It will occupy 120,000 square feet and will feature five stories. Along with the 150 rooms, including 25 suites, the new hotel will also offer an outdoor terrace with views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada foothills, a pool, and a fitness center.

The facility is slated to be completed by the fall of 2022 and to incorporate modern designs and traditional tribal elements.

Located on Highway 50, Red Hawk Casino currently features more than 2,000 slot machines and a number of table games, as well as five dining outlets. The recent hotel groundbreaking marked the first physical expansion at the gambling venue since it was launched in late 2008.

It should also be noted that this is the latest expansion project initiated at a California tribal casino in recent months. Earlier this year, Thunder Valley Casino Resort in the Sacramento area broke ground on a $100 million expansion that includes the addition of a new indoor entertainment center.

And it was earlier this year again when Wilton Rancheria, in partnership with Boyd Gaming, launched construction on a $500 million hotel and casino resort in Elk Grove.
